Gestures
I was on a 1953 cruise aboard the USS Noxubee, from Newport, R.I. to the Med. I have two memories of our Bosun. The first was the day after I reported aboard in Dec. 1952 as a 17 year kid and we assembled on deck for the morning gathering. I was a kid from the country and I spit on the deck thinking of it as the ground. The Bosun looked at that and looked at me and that was the last time I spit on the deck.
The second time was when we entered Casablanca harbor and there was a "bum" boat hovering around to sell the sailors trinkets.
The Capt. told the Bosun to "Get that boat our of there". Shouting at them did not help so the Bosun energized a fire hose and blew the guy out of the boat. I still remember the Bosun did not go ashore for the 1 day we were in port.
